Why are they called Rhodesian Ridgebacks?

The first ridged dogs were found in Egypt around 3000 BC according to carvings and paintings found in tombs of the Pharaohs.  The Khoi-khoi a/k/a Hottentot tribes migrated down into Africa taking their dogs with them.  The Khoi used the ridged dogs to chase off lions and leopards, herd cattle, track game, and protect the home. The breed was further developed in Rhodesia (named after Cecil Rhodes) by European settlers who added in their favorite breeds to standardize size, color and looks.

The ridge is a strip of hair growing backwards up the spine from the hips to the top of the shoulders.  The arc at the top of the ridge is called a fan.  The little swirl on each side of the fan is a crown.  Ridgebacks can be born with multiple crowns and even multiple fans although this is rare.  Ridgebacks can also be born without a ridge.  They are called a 'slick' or simply a Ridgeless Ridgeback.

Ridgeback like cats, beds and sunshine

Chisum, Teddy the Terror (cat), Dozer & Katie in their favorite spot on the bed in the soaking up the rays. Life is good!  Ridgebacks like to be near their families and don't make good yard dogs, especially when it is cold outside.  Ridgebacks raised with indoor cats tolerate them quite well but still consider the cats prey if they catch them outside.

Wheaten and Red Wheaten

Ridgeback coat color ranges from light wheaten to dark red wheaten.  A medium red wheaten, like Stella (left) blends in perfectly with fallen leaves in the Oklahoma autumn woods.  Ridgebacks love to go on hikes and search for rabbits and other prey.  These hounds use their noses and eyes equally well.

The photo on the left and right were taken about 45 seconds apart.  This is how fast Chisum can change from a "dud" to a "stud".  Chisum hated showing and usually chose to be a dud in the show ring.  The rare times I could get him to turn on the pizzazz is when he won.  Attitude is everything in the show ring.
